Classic Travel, Great Malvern
Locally named ex G.W.R. Saint Class locomotive No. 2947, Madresfield Court, waits at the head of the Paddington-Hereford express for the local Midland branch train from Ashchurch to enter Great Malvern Station in the early 1950's. Waiting in the east car park are two Morgans, a 1934 three wheeler super sports beetleback and a 1950 Plus 4 drophead coupe.

The Lakes Express
Under the watchful gaze of Skiddaw (3,053 ft) hauled by Ivatt class 2F 2-6-0 No. 46432, down the Lakes Express leaves Bassenthwaite Lake Station on her journey from Pentrith to Workington during the late 1950's. Closed in 1966, this line now forms part of the A66 Trunk Road.

A winter's afternoon in Hull during the late 1950's sees locally based ex L.N.E.R. B1 Class No. 61010 Wildebeeste crossing Anlaby Road with a passenger train for Paragon station. Waiting at the gates is the No.69 trolley-bus on route from Meadowbank Road to city centre.

Twilight of the Trams (Leeds)
A busy scene in Leeds during the late 1950's when trams and steam trains still soldiered on. An ex L.N.E.R. B16 Class locomotive waits impatiently to leave 'City' stationwhile Horsfield car No. 180 and Feltham car No. 501 go their separate ways along lower Briggate. Both these trams have since been preserved.

 | Great Victoria Street, Belfast
In this 1952 scene a 'Rebuild' tram No. 252 is leaving the city en route for Malone Road. Parked outside the terminus station on the Great Northern Railway are horse drawn and Scammell vehicles of the Ulster Transport Authority. This magnificent building was demolished in the late 1960's to make way for the Europa Hotel. The Belfasttramway system ended in Febuary 1954.

The Wicker Arch, Sheffield
Waiting on the arch is ex L.N.E.R. B17 class No. 61626 Brancepeth Castle in 1953. The following year saw this part of the line between Sheffield Victoria and Manchester electricfied. Standard tramcar No. 253 waits along with car No. 189 build in 1934 and now reserved at the NAtional Tramway Museum, Crich, Derbyshire.

 | Sunsets on the Overhead, Liverpool
December 1956, and one of the last trains of the Liverpool Overhead Railway crosses James Street. The demise of the tramway system followed nine months later on September 14th 1957. Having left Pier Head for Bowring Park 'Baby Grand' car No. 237 passes under the 'dockers umbrella' with the Dock Board offices towering above.

The "Red Dragon" at Newport
Cardiff Canton Britannia Class No. 70022 Tornado departs Newport (High Street) with the up Red Dragon in 1958. This thirteen coasch express ran daily from Carmarthen to London taking 5hrs 20mins. Alongside is ex G.W.R. 0-6-0 Pannier Tank No. 4671 waiting in between passenger duties in the Monmouthshire valleys. This engine worked its entire life from Newport Ebbw Junction Shed.

 | When Steam Was King, Wolverhampton
A winter afternoon at Wolverhampton Low Level Station in the late 1950's. Ex G.W.R. King Class No. 6009 King Charles II brings her train in to start The Inner City 4.35pm express to Paddington. A northbound Grange Class makes ready for the road, while an ex L.N.W.R. G2 'goods' passes on the High Level line and a trolley-bus on the Wednesfield Road Bridge completes the scene.

Nearing the end of B.R. operation in 1956, Beyer Peacock 0-6-0T No. 823 (The Countess) crosses Church Street, Welshpool, with a cattle train. This 2'6" gauge line opened in 1903, closing to passenger traffic in 1931. Re-opening in 1963 as a preserved railway.

Abercynon Shed 1950's
A typical South Wales loco depot, Abercynon was refurbished by the G.W.R. in 1929 and closed in 1964. The scene depicts a visitor to the shed from Cardiff Canton, the preserved pannier tank No. 5786. Ex Taff Vale 0-6-2 tanks and Class 56XX's were typical.

Designed at Horwich works and built at Horwick and Crewe the mixed traffic 2-6-0 Fowler "Crab" was the workhorse of the L.M.S. No. 42700 was a Newton Heath loco and is seen heading towards Manchester along the Calder Valley line through Middleton Junction in the late 1950's.

Golden Days, Beckenham Junction
Bulleid's West Country pacific class No. 34092 "City of Wells" accelerates through Beckenham Junction station with the "down" "Golden Arrow" during the mid 1950's. This prestigious pullman boat train ran from London Victoria to Folkestone Harbour returning from Dover with the "up" train which was steam hauled until 1961.
